Frequently asked questions

What is the market test?

The market test is a market research method that is carried out to find out how consumers will react to the market launch of a new product. Current market data and real customer preferences are collected.

How does the market test work?

In a market test, consumers see online advertising for your product concept, just as they would if the product were already available. Some of the people click on the ad. These people are taken to a landing page that describes the product. We openly communicate that the product is still in development. If they are still interested in the product, they can take part in a survey and receive further information about the product in return. In this way, we ensure that only people who have a genuine interest in the product take part in the survey. This allows us to reach early adopters and power users who will buy a large proportion of your products in the first few months after market launch.

What do I get with a market test?

During the market test, we will create the following delivery items for you:

  • We create a landing page with a product description and publish it on a URL of your choice.
  • We can reserve a new URL (at no extra cost) or use one of your existing domains or subdomains.
  • We create online advertising for you (e.g. Instagram, Facebook and Tiktok) to reach interested consumers.
  • We create an online survey that asks customer preferences and answers your most important questions.
  • You receive a live market report with current market data and real customer preferences.

Why is the market test used?

A product launch in Switzerland costs between CHF 1 and 10 million, including listing fees, marketing and production costs. Despite this, 70-90% of products have already disappeared again just 1 year after launch. The market test greatly reduces the risk of a failed product launch.

The market test helps to reduce this risk in three ways:

  • Up-to-date market data: Our customers need up-to-date market data to convince retailers to list the product.
  • Customer-centric product development: Our customers want to involve consumers in product development so that the product is also bought by consumers when it is on the retailers' shelves.
  • Feedback under market conditions: Our customers want to test their product concept under real market conditions to understand the added value of the product compared to existing products.
When is the market test carried out?

The market test is carried out 6 to 18 months before the product is launched. At this point, a product concept already exists. In some cases, initial surveys and focus groups have already been conducted to develop the concept.

Do you need a finished product concept for a market test?

Yes, a product concept is needed for the market test. Based on this, we then create the texts and images for the website. On request, we also provide support in the development of product concepts.

More about the concept

Ideally, a product concept contains the following elements:

  • Brief description of the target group and the product
  • Insight: What problem does the product solve?
  • Benefits: What are the 3-5 advantages/claims of the product?
  • Reason-to-Believe: Why should the customer trust the product?
  • Visualization of the product (the more realistic the better)
  • Minimal branding: name, logo, 1-2 colors
How does the market test differ from other MaFo approaches?
  • In a market test, product concepts are tested under real market conditions (in contrast to the laboratory conditions of panels or focus groups).
  • Product concepts are tested in the current market environment (in contrast to historical data from Nielsen).
  • The study measures how consumers will react specifically to the launch of your product (as opposed to generic market share, category CAGR, etc.).
  • Participants take part in the study voluntarily (no payment).
What data do we collect in a market test?
  • Direct survey via questionnaire to get quick customer feedback
  • Behavioral observation on social media. This gives us an honest reaction from the everyday lives of consumers.
  • Behavioral observation on the homepage allows conclusions to be drawn about the genuine interest of consumers.
Are the results of the market test representative?

Yes, the results are representative of your future target group. We guarantee a minimum of 100 responses*. In a successful market test, the sample contains several hundred people.

In a market test, consumers qualify themselves for participation in the study by clicking on an online advertisement. This means that the sample only contains people who are interested in your product. This means that the results are not representative of the population as a whole, but they are very representative of your future target group. We are always amazed at how the actual target group differs from the expected target group.

Even if we don't get 100 responses, we have learned something. Namely, that the concept needs to be revised again before production can begin. And we find out why the concept is not convincing. We recruit from a consumer panel and guarantee at least 100 responses, at no extra cost to you.

How long does a market test take?

A market test usually takes four weeks. After the joint kickoff, we need a few days to create a landing page for your product concept. One week after the kickoff, we launch the online advertising campaign. We then collect customer feedback from the market for 3 weeks. Only 4 weeks after the kickoff, you will finally receive your live market report with all market data and insights.

What is the result?

We will be happy to send you a sample report so that you can get an idea of what your report could look like.
